High country silence
rugged and defiant
where hard work is a joy.
Here is a peace
to be found nowhere else
in the world...

Usually during the first part of June the ranchers along the foothills of Alberta gather the yearling cattle and drive them 15 to 20 miles or more up into the forest reserve. Sometimes a second drive consisting or heifers that have been with the bulls for a few weeks takes place in mid-July up to the same area as the yearlings. There they are left to graze free for the summer.

The fall roundup usually takes place sometime in the middle of October. The cattle need to be rounded up and driven out of the forest reserve before the snow flies, usually no later than the third week of October. There are always stragglers that have to be located and corralled. This is the time when the cowboys earn their wages. It can be hard work but cowboys I know would not trade this life for a desk job no way. This is some of the most beautiful high country in the whole of North America.
